2026 Australia Minimum Wage, Student Work Hours, and Tax Filing Basics

2026 National Minimum Wage

From 1 July 2025, the Australian national minimum wage is $24.10 per hour. This applies to most employees, including international students working in Australia.

Work Limits for International Students

Student visa holders are allowed to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session. During scheduled holidays, there is no limit on working hours.

Tax File Number (TFN) Application

To work in Australia, you generally need a Tax File Number (TFN). You can apply online through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website. Your TFN is free to obtain, and you should provide it to your employer so that tax is withheld at the correct rate.

Annual Tax Return

If you worked in Australia during the financial year (1 July to 30 June), you may need to lodge a tax return. Most international students are considered Australian residents for tax purposes after meeting certain criteria. You can lodge your return online via myTax, or use a registered tax agent. The deadline for lodging is usually 31 October, but if you use a tax agent, the deadline may be extended.

Keep records of your income, expenses, and any tax withheld to make lodging easier. If you are unsure about your obligations, consider seeking advice from a tax professional.
