Computer Science & Information Systems in QS Subject Rankings 2026: Global Distribution and Top-Tier Indicators

The 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject lists 850 institutions worldwide in Computer Science & Information Systems, spanning 79 countries and regions. At the very top sits the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at rank 1, but the more revealing story in this year’s table lies in how the discipline’s upper tier is distributed—and how quickly the field thins out after the first few dozen places.

The Top of the Table: A Small, High-Score Cluster

Only 3 institutions in the entire subject achieve an overall score of 90 or above. That number grows to 16 when the threshold drops to 80, and to 70 at the 70-point mark. In other words, the very highest tier of Computer Science & Information Systems is extremely compact: fewer than 20 schools worldwide sit in what might be called the “elite score zone,” and the gap between them and the rest of the field is substantial.

The top 10 positions are filled by 10 different institutions—each rank from 1 to 10 is occupied by exactly one school. This is a fully populated top decile, with no ties or gaps at the very front. Below that, the pattern continues: ranks 11 through 20 hold 10 institutions, and ranks 21 through 30 hold another 10. The top 30 is a clean, continuous block.

Where the Discipline Concentrates: Country-Level Distribution

The United States leads the country leaderboard with 106 ranked institutions—more than double the next country. The United Kingdom follows with 59, and China (Mainland) is close behind at 57. India contributes 44, Germany 33, and France 31. Italy, Canada, Australia, and Spain round out the top 10 countries with 26, 25, 24, and 24 ranked institutions respectively.

What this distribution suggests is that Computer Science & Information Systems, unlike some more regionally concentrated fields, has a genuinely global footprint. The top 10 countries alone account for a large share of the 850 listed institutions, but 79 countries in total appear on the table—meaning the discipline is taught and ranked across a wide range of national systems, from research-intensive universities in North America and Europe to rapidly growing programs in South Asia and East Asia.

The Middle and Lower Ranks: Where the Field Thins Out

A median rank cannot be computed across all 850 listed institutions: the institution at the median position has only a published rank range (401-450), and QS publishes only a rank range for some institutions rather than an exact rank. What the table does show is that the field is far from uniformly top-heavy—the top 10 holds 10 institutions, while 840 sit outside the top 10, and 750 sit outside the top 100.

The distribution by rank bands makes this thinning visible. The top 10 holds 10 institutions, the next 10 (ranks 11–20) holds another 10, and ranks 21–30 holds 10 more. Ranks 31–50 contain 20 institutions, and ranks 51–100 contain 50. Moving further down, ranks 101–150 hold 51 institutions and ranks 151–200 hold 49. Below that, QS publishes rank bands rather than exact ranks: 52 institutions fall in the published 201–250 band and 54 in the 251–300 band. Beyond rank 300, the remaining 544 institutions are spread across a very wide range—from rank 301 all the way to 850. This means that more than half of all ranked programs in this subject fall outside the top 300, a fact worth noting for applicants who are comparing options across a broad spectrum.

Score Bands: What the Numbers Actually Mean

The score distribution reinforces the picture of a top-heavy field. Only 3 institutions score 90 or above, and 16 score 80 or above. When the threshold drops to 70, the count rises to 70 institutions. At 60, it jumps to 200. The cumulative counts run from the 60-point threshold upward: 200 institutions score 60 or above, 70 score 70 or above, 16 score 80 or above, and 3 score 90 or above. These are cumulative figures, meaning the same schools are counted at each threshold. What this tells us is that a score of 60 or above is achieved by 200 institutions. The remaining 650 institutions are listed with a rank or rank band but no published overall score; a missing overall score does not mean they scored below any threshold or were dropped from the ranking. The practical implication for applicants: a school’s overall score in this subject is a strong signal of where it sits in a very steep hierarchy.

What This Means for Prospective Students

For readers choosing a program by subject, the key takeaway is that Computer Science & Information Systems is a field with an unusually clear stratification. The top 10 is fully occupied, and the overall scores published for those 10 institutions range from 85.9 to 94.9. The top 50 is still relatively compact, with 50 institutions across ranks 1–50. But beyond rank 100, the field expands dramatically—750 institutions sit outside the top 100, and 650 sit outside the top 200.

This structure means that the “middle” of the ranking is very crowded, while the top is sparse. For applicants, this suggests that the difference between rank 50 and rank 100 may be less meaningful in terms of program quality than the difference between rank 10 and rank 50, where score gaps are larger. It also means that schools in the lower published rank bands are part of a substantial cohort, rather than outliers—52 institutions fall in the published 201–250 band and 54 in the 251–300 band.
